The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), a leader in protecting Florida's water resources, is seeking a Staff or Senior Attorney in the District's Office of General Counsel. The successful candidate will perform moderate to complex professional legal and administrative work, principally advising and representing the District's divisions under supervision of the Deputy General Counsel.
Provides advice and assistance to the General Counsel and other District staff.
Represents the District in litigation and other proceedings before federal, state, and administrative and judicial tribunals.
Provides legal advice and written opinions to various District divisions on applicable law and related matters.
Makes presentations before the Governing Board, District staff, and the general public when necessary.
Participates in District emergency management activities, other departmental activities, departmental projects, and performs other duties as needed.
The successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to develop and evaluate strategies for solving legal problems, generate alternative solutions and strategies, and develop a plan of action involving a variety of technical and legal issues associated with the District's areas of responsibility. The candidate must possess a high level of proficiency in her or his ability to identify legal issues, formulate relevant legal theories, and synthesize legal argumentation. It is expected that a senior attorney can plan and organize work, investigate facts, search legal precedents and draft the necessary legal documents, develop conclusions and recommendations regarding case assignments with minimal supervision. The position may also include direction to junior staff on methods, strategies, and other legal assignments.
