Description of Job
The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) located in the Platte River Valley in downtown Denver. AHEC is the service provider for 43,000 students and approximately 5000 faculty and staff working at and attending the Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver.
This position is located in the AHEC Police Department. The AHEC Police Department provides emergency, non-emergency, technical and communications support for the Auraria Campus Community.

This position requires rotating shift work. You must be willing and able to work shift work.
Duties of the Position:
The Police Officer (Intern) position responds to a variety of civil matters as well as enforces applicable local, state, and federal laws. Duties include, writing reports; performing preliminary investigations; collecting evidence; responding to various alarms; detecting and arresting wrongdoers; and community policing activities. The Auraria Campus Police Department employs various policing methods including foot, bike and vehicle patrol. Additionally, officers perform crowd management functions at a large number of special events.
This position is also required to participate in ongoing training in a variety of law enforcement practices and techniques. Police Officers at AHEC must qualify in firearms proficiency on a quarterly basis. Police Officer Interns are training officers and require a satisfactory completion of a training period before advancing to an Officer I with one year experience
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
- One year of college coursework (30 semester hours).
- Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and no:
- Felony Convictions
- Domestic Violence Convictions
- Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver's license.
- Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten (10) years

- Appropriate experience will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- Possession of current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification will substitute for required education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (In addition to the aforementioned qualifications, the following qualifications are preferred and preference will be given to candidates possessing these qualifications):
- Those candidates who are Colorado P.O.S.T. certified AND have at least 1 (one) year of professional law enforcement experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Those candidates that have recently completed a Law Enforcement Academy are strongly encouraged to apply.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- The applicant must successfully pass a physical agility and written exam. Both of these exams will be scheduled at a later date. Candidates will be notified of location for physical agility testing and written examination prior to test date.
- Positions require a personal and employment background investigation which may include a polygraph interview, fingerprint check and drug screen.
- The Background investigation is part of the exam process. The policy of Auraria Police Services is to apply uniform standards of integrity and conduct to all employees without regard to assignment within the agency. Candidates must pass the minimum employment standards for Police Officers to continue in the examination and interviewing process.
- After a conditional offer of employment is made, each prospective employee will be required to provide proof of a POST certificate and submit to physical and psychological examinations by a doctor or health care facility which is selected or approved by the Auraria Police Services in order to determine whether or not a prospective employee can perform the essential functions of the job. Failure to pass the physical and/or the psychological evaluation will result in removal from this employment list.
To be considered for this position, YOU MUST be currently Colorado P.O.S.T. certified or currently attending a law enforcement academy.
Note: Positions are subject to a background investigation in accordance with the administrative procedures of the State Personnel Director. Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303 (5)(b), C.R.S.
