Radford's next Chief of Police will lead a department of highly respected Police Officers and civilian staff in a community that supports and engages with its public safety personnel. The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or a related field, must be a Certified LE Officer and have at least 7 years of wide and progressively responsible experience in police service. The Chief of Police will perform complex professional and administrative work directing all activities of the Police Department. The Police Chief reports directly to the City Manager.
The Chief of Police must have the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the Police operation and to institute improvements while leading and directing the activities of police officers. The Chief of Police will prepare the agency's annual budget; direct the monitoring of all budgetary expenditures; develop and evaluate policies, procedures, programs, operations and proposals; oversee the administrative processes associated with all facilities, vehicles, equipment, uniforms, weapons, supplies and assets of the department; conduct annual performance evaluations on direct subordinates and review all performance evaluations of all subordinates; prepare and present various reports, studies, requests and special assignments to the City Manager and City Council; initiate research and continue to evaluate processes to ensure that all operations and functions of the agency remain contemporary and respondent to the changing community needs; maintain and promote professional and positive relationships with other City departments, local, county, state, federal level public agencies, the civilian service community, as well as the University; possess or develop thorough knowledge of the geography of the City; comprehensive knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations relating to the administration of criminal justice law and enforcement; be knowledgeable about scientific methods of crime detection, criminal identification and radio communication.
