CHIEF OF POLICE TOWN OF RICHLANDS, NC
The Town of Richlands, North Carolina, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the
position of Chief of Police. Richlands is located 12 miles from Jacksonville and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Onslow County and is a historic, family oriented community with a population of 1,809. Richlands operates on the Mayor–Council form of government, with a Mayor and five Aldermen. An appointed Town Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the town. The Police Department provides service twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week with seven full-time officers, one part-time officer, and unpaid reserve officers. One full-time officer performs code enforcement/detective duties. The Chief of Police is hired by the Board of Aldermen but reports directly to the Town Administrator. The Department has a current operating budget of $524,300. The current Chief of Police is retiring after seven years as head of the department and 16 years with the town as a law enforcement officer.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of five years of broad and extensive supervisory experience in law enforcement in a comparably complex or larger community. Ideal candidates will also possess either an intermediate or advanced law enforcement certificate through the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Other requirements include: a strong commitment to community-oriented policing; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills; the ability to relate to elected officials, Town staff, citizens, and other law enforcement officials; thorough knowledge of federal, state, and municipal ordinances related to law enforcement; and a working knowledge of the departmental budget process.
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice or Public Administration is not required but highly preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Residency within ten miles of Town is required within one year of hiring date.
